There is a major issue after the updates of July 2016 and the windows update stuck checking for updates and cannot receive any.

To resolve this, download and install manually the KB3172605 update from the Miscosoft. Depending to your OS select one from the followings
All supported x86-based versions of Windows 7
All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7
All supported x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2
All supported IA-64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2
